This isn&#8217;t always easy, but these days (in 2011) more and more fast food chains are offering healthy choices. A chain that didn&#8217;t make the list, but should (in our opinion) is Subway. They have a great selection of low fat and healthy subs. They even have guacamole this summer!</p><p>The next time you are out and about and decide to stop at a fast food joint, take the time to study the menu and see if you can&#8217;t come up with at least a few healthy choices &#8211; even if you splurge and get that milkshake or those yummy french fries (aka Freedom Fries.) As we get older and our metabolisms slow, it is not uncommon  for additional fat to accumulate in this region, especially in women.  As previously stated, heredity and hormonal changes as well as your  body type may make you more or less prone to belly fat.</p><p>Studies have also shown that  factors such as depression and stress also have an effect on the accumulation  of belly fat. Especially for women of a slender physique, stressful  times may cause your body to react by storing fat in your abdominal  region instead of your hips, butt, or thighs. However, everyone stores  fat differently – which is why some people are considered to have  an ‘apple-shape’ while others have a ‘pear-shape’.</p><p>Besides causing an uncomfortable  or unattractive appearance, women with excessive belly fat can also  develop serious health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, breast  cancer, hypertension and colorectal cancer. Men run similar risks, with  conditions like high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, heart  disease, stroke and metabolic syndrome developing as a result of excessive  fat accumulation.</p><p>So what can one do to prevent  the onslaught of additional belly fat? A common misconception is that  by completing ab-specific exercises such as crunches or sit-ups that  belly fat will be obliterated. While these types of exercises do help  to strengthen the muscle underneath the fat, they do not necessarily  work to alleviate the problem itself. Fitness experts agree that a combination  of strength training and aerobic exercises are the only thing that will  completely eradicate belly fat. Here are a few things to keep in mind  when planning your fitness routine.</p><ul
type="DISC"><li>Consult with    a doctor before starting any new regular fitness routine. A doctor    can help you determine what a healthy weight for your age and frame    should be, and also help recommend exercises that you should avoid due    to current injuries or ailments. A visit to a nutritionist can help    determine what factors in your diet may need to be adjusted before you    can be successful in your weight loss endeavor.</li><li>Burn more calories    than you consume. The concept is simple, if you consume less calories    than you burn off every day, then your routine will result in a weight    loss. However, if you’re supplementing your new fitness routine with    extra food, you may not see the results that you are hoping for.</li><li>Eat a responsible    diet. Processed or fast foods should not be a staple in anyone’s    diet. Even if you’re counting calories, the extra sodium and preservatives    found in these types of food may actually cause you to retain more weight.    Eat a balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins    and a minimum of sugar.</li><li>Focus on a full    body strategic workout. Focusing on your entire body when you’re    working out will increase your metabolic rate and fat-burning hormonal    response. Isolating specific body parts such as just your abs, will    not help to burn the actual fat covering the muscle. A well-rounded    training program that focuses on the entire body is best – and is    key to losing that unwanted belly fat.</li><li>Participate in    30 minutes of cardiovascular activity five days per week. According    to the Journal of Applied Physiology, both men and women can reduce    the amount of belly fat that they have by participating in just 30 minutes    of cardio five times per week. To really boost the impact, tack on 15    minutes of strength training exercises after your cardio sessions, such    as crunches, leg lifts, pushups, etc.</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p>To lose that stubborn belly  fat, it is important to not only focus on exercising, but also your  diet and methods of fitness as well. Ab exercises are beneficial to  help strengthen the abdominals, back, and core however doing strictly  these motions or repetitions will do little to actually reduce the amount  of fat on top of the muscle. Exercise is done as a routine; however, physical activity is done during everyday activities such as taking the stairs at work or riding your bicycle to school. By adding physical activity into daily behaviors you can significantly increase the number of calories burned. How exactly are these calories burned? For starters, your body burns calories, as it needs energy to perform basic functions. These functions can range from brain activity to walking up the stairs. The more activity your body performs the more calories it burns. However, physical activity also causes your metabolism to increase, which increases the amount of fat that your body burns. So, instead of just using the most available energy available through food, your body can also tap into your fat stores and use that macronutrient source for energy.</p><p>One of the most important considerations is the speed in which people lose weight. It is recommended to lose weight slowly to maintain a better health status. First, consider that when you lose weight fast you lose the ability to work to lose just fat. So, when you lose weight fast you lose muscle along with fat. Muscle is crucial in weight loss, as muscle burns fat. Without muscle, you lose less fat, which is the weight that ideally you want to lose. Since muscle promotes fat burning, it helps promote your metabolism. If losing weight fast means losing more muscle that means slowing down your metabolism. In the long run, this translates into gaining more weight in the future.</p><p>The other way to burn more fat while losing weight is to eat. Eat? You might be thinking that doesn’t sound right, however, eating the right foods in the right proportion can actually sum up to an increase in fat burned and weight lost. There are certain foods, some given the title of “super foods,” that can be consumed to increase metabolism and therefore weight los and fat burned.  How these foods are able to increase fat burning in your body is an easy process.  Basically after you eat your body’s insulin levels increase, which slow metabolism and increases fat storage. These foods, then, keep insulin levels low after eating, increasing metabolism and fat burned. Some foods include high-calcium items such as milk, salmon, green tea, edamame, and broccoli.</p><p>By effectively targeting different aspects of your lifestyle, your body will be able to process calories more efficiently, while at the same time being able to burn fat. This result, burning fat while losing weight, is difficult to achieve because it requires constant monitoring of food intake and physical activity. There is more pressure on women than men to lose the weight but that  doesn’t mean that it is any less important for men to drop the pounds.  Being overweight has become all too common and almost a fixture in our  society.<span

The  reason it becomes more difficult to lose weight as you get older is  because your metabolism slows down from being less active. This leaves a lot of men over 40  wondering how they can go about losing  unwanted body fat and boost their metabolism without having to eat salad  all day.</p><p>When it comes to dropping unwanted pounds the enemy is  calories. According to cdc.com “You gain weight when the calories you  burn, including those burned during physical activity, are less than the  calories you eat or drink”.</p><p>In order to get to and stay at a healthy weight this requires regular  physical activity and a healthy eating plan. Both dieting and physical  activity play a pivotal role in controlling your weight. Partaking in  the proper amount of calories and being active results in the weight  loss. You will need a high amount of physical activity unless you also  adjust your diet and reduce the amount of calories you’re eating and  drinking.</p><p>The suggested amount of calories to consume per day for an adult male is  2500. For example, by eating 500 less calories than you burn every day  for one week, you would lose one pound. If you ate 500 calories less  than normal, and burned 500 more calories than normal in exercise (every  day), you would lose 2 pounds a week.</p><p>In order to drop the amount of weight that you want to, you need to have  the proper balance of foods and drinks. Some of the foods and drinks  that should be considered when thinking of dropping the unwanted pounds  are:</p><ul><li>Snacks &#8211; Instead of potato snacks, fried chicken or other fatty foods by eating fresh fruits and vegetables.</li><li>Fat free milk &#8211; Milk is high in calcium and calcium can boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells.</li><li>Green Tea &#8211; Studies show you can burn 35-43% more fat during the day when you drink 3-to-5 cups of green tea</li><li>Water &#8211; You can burn an extra 250-to-500 calories a day by drinking 8-to-10  glasses of ice cold water because your body has to burn calories (or  fat) in order to heat the ice cold water back up to your body  temperature so basically you can lose 1lb a day just by drinking ice  cold water. Water is very important for life, including weight loss. It’s very  clean, just helps the body filter out dirt, and does not contain  calories.</li><li>Hot Peppers &#8211; One fat burning food for men that will speed up your metabolism is hot peppers.</li><li>Beans &#8211; Beans may not seem like a traditional diet food, but it works as one  on many levels. Beans work as appetite suppressants, by helping you feel  full longer. Beans also pack a big dose of fiber and protein, for very  little calories, making it a great fat burning food.</li><li>Soup &#8211; One of the best diet foods for men is lower calorie, broth or tomato based soups.</li><li>Cereal &#8211; High fiber, whole-grain cereal is a great fat burning food option, for breakfast or a snack.</li><li>Lean Turkey &#8211; Lean turkey has long been a favorite fat burning food for body  builders. The protein in this diet food can raise your metabolism, which  helps to build up lean muscle. This in turn, helps your body to burn  fat.</li></ul><p>The use of these foods and drinks in portions can be added to your diet  and help you with your weight loss. Striking the balance is what will  allow you to lose the weight that you feel is adequate for you and your  body.</p><p>Remember that there will be no weight loss at all if there is no  physical activity. One of the reasons for weight gain is due to the fact  that at 40 you are a lot less active than you were in your younger  years. Therefore it is imperative that you have a daily walk  (approximately 30-45minutes). It is also suggested that you workout  about 150 minutes (2 hours) a week, doing moderate to intense aerobics  (i.e. Brisk walking or running).</p><p>Being active daily is one of the best ways to allow your body to relieve  some of the different things (fats) that it has ingested. Losing weight  once you reach 40 is all about your commitment to being healthy. Do you find yourself fighting to keep your eyes open and focus  on your computer screen? No matter how you spend your day, drowsiness  can hamper your productivity. If it has become a regular pattern, you  may need to change a few aspects of your lifestyle. Here are 5 tips  to help you stay alert throughout the day.<span

Schedule Your Sleep</p><p>If you don’t consciously block out  a specific time slot for sleep, your sleep “pattern” will be sporadic  at best. If your schedule doesn’t permit you to get the recommended  7 hours of sleep per night on a regular basis, you may want to rethink  a few commitments. If you procrastinate, you may end up saving projects  until right before bedtime, which can cause them to take longer than  if you tackled them in the daytime.</p><p>2. Don’t Nap</p><p>Avoid daytime sleep if at all possible.  In some cases, a 20-minute power nap may be appropriate or even helpful,  but this should not become a habit. If you nap, it could become harder  to fall asleep at night and throw off your sleep schedule. Nighttime  sleep is the most effective and important, since your body can take  care of a lot of internal activities during that one long stretch of  time. If you simply must take a nap, schedule it for earlier in the  day.</p><p>3.  Wake Up at a Consistent Time</p><p>You may not feel like getting up at  a decent hour on your day off, but waking up at approximately the same  time each day is a good way to get your body on a consistent (and therefore  effective) sleep schedule. Your body may not adapt to this pattern right  away, but with persistence, your body will begin to fall asleep around  the same time every night as a result. This means less chance of insomnia  and a simple rhythm to help keep your sleep schedule on track.</p><p>4.  Eat Good Food</p><p>Healthy and consistent mealtimes can  actually give you energy throughout the day and help regulate your body’s  sleep rhythm as well. Try to avoid eating within 2 hours of bedtime,  though, because the body can’t effectively go through the initial  digestion process and drop into a deep sleep at the same time. Keep  drinking water, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to keep your  system fresh.</p><p>5. Get Some Exercise</p><p>Exercise gives you energy and helps  you stay focused during the day. Additionally, if you wear yourself  out exercising, you will probably sleep deeply to recover! A good goal  is to aim for at least 30 minutes most days of vigorous physical activity.  This could include anything from sweating at the gym to taking a brisk  walk around your neighborhood.</p><p>You don’t have to rely on expensive  energy drinks or frequent breaks in order to eliminate drowsiness and  maintain productivity throughout your day. Frequent washings removes germs that        we acquire from everything we touch, from door knobs to items in a store,        and one of the dirtiest tings we all touch- money. So wash your hands        frequently, and when you cant wash with soap and water, use wet wipes        or germicide at the least, until you can wash with soap and water.</li><li>Get enough sleep.        Sleep is critical for your immune system, it is our bodies time to rejuvenate        and fight off the germs. Adults should get 8-10 hours of sleep a night,        to maintain optimum health.</li><li>Drink lots of water,        8-10 glasses a day. Water will re-hydrate your body, rinse the toxins        from your body, and give you a much better ability to fight off colds.</li><li>Get exercise,         which will get more oxygen into your system, again lowering your chance        of catching a cold. Just 30 minutes five times a week can increase your        immune fighting  system.</li><li>If you are a smoker,         you should stop right away. Smoking reduces your bodies ability to fight        of infection, and to remove mucus from your lungs. If you are not a        smoker, avoid second hand smoke. Exposure to second hand smoke can lower        your immunity, leaving you unable to fight off germs.</li><li>Eating a healthy        diet, rich in vitamin C, can raise your immunity and prevent colds.         5-6 daily servings of fruits and vegetables such as spinach, brightly        colored peppers, oranges and citrus fruits.  Garlic and onions        are rich in nutrients, which have antibody producing properties.</li></ul><p>So while none of these habits  alone can prevent a cold, by incorporating these habits into your daily  life, your risk of colds has been lowered, and you have taken a big  step towards a healthier life style.</p></div></div><p>Related Health Blog posts:<ol><li><a

While it  would be great if you could do something that would prevent sickness  from ever knocking at your door, this is truly impossible. At some point  your body will succumb to the pressures of life and fall victim to some  virus or bacteria that has worked its way into your body. While you  can never prevent sickness 100%, there are definitely measures that  can be taken that can help fight it off as much as possible.<span

A healthy and well-balanced diet will provide  your body with the nutrients it needs to get through each day. If your  body is energized with the right nutrients then each body system will  be able to function properly, that includes your immune system. With  the fast-paced life that has come to be synonymous with daily life in  American society, many Americans have resorted to eating on the go.  This entails more fast-food bad-choice meals which leads to a deficit  in the right nutrients your body needs. What results is an individual  who is depriving their immune system of what it needs to work. Thus,  we end up with taking more “sick days” than what is truly needed.</p><p>For more information  on how to achieve a well-balanced diet, visit MyPyramid.gov. Some quick  items to take note of is that foods with a high Vitamin C content can  help reduce the amount of time that you are sick versus actually preventing  sickness. This is not meant to completely put down foods with Vitamin  C, however, it is important to note that it does not directly prevent  illness, rather just lowers the number of days you are sick. A good  balance of fruits and veggies, in particular, can help prevent the common  flu or cold.</p><p>Another way  you can combat illness is hitting the problem right at the source, the  fast-paced life. Sometimes as Americans, we need to realize that life  cannot just be about always being on the run. Part of getting sick is  a result of always being stressed and exhausted. Having your body in  overdrive for too long will eventually wear your down and cause your  immune system to also not function to its maximum capacity. Take time  to relax at work, at home, even in the car.</p><p>At work you  can take a quick 5 minute break to do some breathing exercises that  relax the mind and open your blood vessels increasing blood flow throughout  the body, or do some yoga exercises. At home, even with the kids always  needing you or your partner needing dinner, you can always take a few  minutes to yourself. Maybe add a few minutes to your shower and bath  and just clear your head, or take a book into your room and close the  door to block out the house noise. Anything that will give you time  to clear your head and just think of nothing will seriously help loosen  the mind, body, and soul. Finally, in the car you can practice breathing  exercises, either on your own or on a tape, or can listen to your favorite  music that will put you in a good mood for the ride.</p><p>The last tidbit  of advice that can be offered on the subject of preventing sickness  is getting a good night’s rest. During sleep is the only time your  body had the chance to recover from the day’s work. As mentioned before,  it is no secret that American life tends to be fast-paced. With this,  it is common for people to cut down their sleeping hours to get more  working hours in each day. This can be extremely detrimental to your  health and should never be an option for wanting to accomplish more  in your day. It is recommended that adults get between 7 and 9 hours  of sleep each night. This will give your body enough time to recuperate  and will help you feel more energized the following day, which can also  translate into being able to get more work done.</p><p>It might seem  like there is not a lot to be done to prevent getting sick. However,  by taking care of these few points you can avoid getting extremely sick  and possibly missing out on work, school, and other obligations that  you have.
