After graduating from cosmetology school, you will be required to pass a test regulated by the state in which you attended cosmetology school. This test is called the cosmetology state board test. If you attended class regularly and passed both the written and practical exams given by your cosmetology school, you should be readily prepared to pass the cosmetology state board test as well.
Similar to the tests that you were given to graduate cosmetology school, the state board test consists of a written and practical test as well. The written test will test your knowledge of cosmetologist and the practical will test your physical cosmetology skills.
Before you take your cosmetology state board practical test, you must first pass your written knowledge test. If you attended your theory classes throughout cosmetology school, you should be prepared with the knowledge to pass the state board written test.
The cosmetology state board written test usually consists of 100 questions, but this will vary from state to state. All of the questions on the test will be taken directly from state approved cosmetology text books. Also, if you took and passed your cosmetology school written test, you should not have to worry about passing the cosmetology state board test because questions from this test will be variations questions from your cosmetology school test.
After you pass your cosmetology state board test, you will have to take the practical portion of the exam. The practical portion focuses on the following three topics:
- Hair cutting and styling
You will need to know your basic hair cuts, heat styling and wet styling.
- Chemical services
For this portion of the test, you will need to review hair coloring, bleaching, relaxing and perming.
- Client safety procedures
Examiners will be closely watching you to see if you practice proper client safety and infection control procedures.
