Cosmetology State Board – What You Should Know

After you complete cosmetology school, you will need to pass the cosmetology state board test to become a licensed cosmetologist.  If you have completed the required hours of cosmetology school, you will be prepared with the knowledge to pass the state boards, but you will still need to review what you have learned to prepare for the exam. The content of cosmetology state board tests vary from state to state, but each test consists of a practical and written portion.

eye lashes and curlersThe practical portion of the test will be hands on. It will test your knowledge and skill of hair cutting, styling and chemical services. In some states, you will also be tested on your knowledge of nail care and health. Most importantly, the hands on portion of the state board exam will test your knowledge on client safety and sanitation procedures. The following is what you need to review about each topic to successfully pass the cosmetology state board test.

  • Infection control, disinfection and client safety
    Make sure you are aware of all client safety procedures taught in cosmetology school.  This is the most important part of the exam. Your examiner will be paying close attention  to the accuracy of these procedures.
  • Chemical  hair service
    You will need to review your skills and knowledge of hair coloring, hair lightening, perms  and relaxers.
  • Hair cutting and styling
    Review the basic hair cuts you were taught in cosmetology school. You will be tested on  them. Also, you will need to review blow dry styling, wet styling and heat styling.

Before you take the practical portion of your cosmetology state board test, you will need to pass the written portion of the exam. The written portion of the exam will come from the information you were taught in your theory classes during cosmetology school.  There will be three main categories in which exam questions will be based on.

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Client Safety
  • Technical knowledge of skin, hair and nail care.
