The Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

When it comes to the health benefits of chocolate, there is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that research points to chocolate having disease fighting properties, while the bad news is that it must be eaten in moderation and not in overly sugary forms.

A new study in Germany has shown that people who ate small amounts of dark chocolate were less at risk for heart attacks and strokes. Researchers believe flavonoids, a substance in the cacao beans used to make chocolate, have anti inflammatory and artery health effects. Cacao has also been found in some studies to have the highest antioxidant levels of any food, and this helps fight free radicals and signs of aging.

What does this mean for you? To get the benefits, go for the darkest chocolate you can get with as little sugar and fat added as possible. Check the labels and aim for 70% or more cacao concentration, and avoid milk chocolate. Milk chocolate, with high sugar and fat content, is more likely to lead to weight gain than health benefits. Remember to keep the servings very small as well. One ounce or less per day is ideal, and that means a tiny square or so. You can also buy pure cacao powder from health food stores and make your own shakes or recipes for an even better benefit.

This is a great example of keeping good things in moderation. Overdoing it can lead to weight gain, and nobody wants that. Keep these guidelines in mind, and you can enjoy your favorite treat while promoting your health.
