Getting Kids to Eat Healthy

Getting kids to eat healthy can be quite a challenge these days. Fast food seems to have become the usual, while fruits and veggies are all but forgotten. So, how do you get your kids to eat healthy? Offering lots of different types of foods and letting them see you eat and enjoy a variety of fresh fruits There are the creative ways to get your kids to eat more vegetables, such as camouflaging them in with other foods, like chopping up and mixing vegetables in with pasta sauces, casseroles, or soup.

  • Let your kids pick the fruits and veggies  they want to eat when you go shopping
  • Offer chopped veggies with a dip, like ranch dressing
  • Mix fruit with jell-o
  • Serve vegetables as a stir-fry
  • Make a snack mix with raisins, nuts and cereal
  • Let your child help prepare the meal
  • Mix fruit pieces in with yogurt or serve them with a dip
  • Make yummy fruit smoothies
  • Offer a fruit salad, with a mix of watermelon, grapes, strawberries, etc. as a dessert or snack
  • Add chopped fruit, especially berries and bananas, to your child’s cereal
  • Serve dried fruits for snacks

Involving kids in cooking and kitchen preparation can really pique their interest, and make them feel useful. Even though it will create more mess, it can teach them lifelong kitchen skills. Young children can help make salads and can help create soups.

Letting them help decide what healthy dish to prepare, or allowing them to help you shop and then bringing the healthy fruits and vegetables home to use in the kitchen lets them feel good about making decisions. However, easiest of all is teaching children to avoid junk food by your own good example, because it is a proven fact that kids learn to eat what their parents eat.
