People often associate healthy habits with spending a lot of money. Between organic foods, expensive gym memberships, and new equipment, it is easy to lose more weight from your wallet than your waist if you are not careful. It does not have to be that way, especially in a struggling economy.
Here are some simple ways to implement a health plan without breaking the bank:
- Exercise Outdoors or At Home. Who wants to feel like a hamster on a wheel at the gym treadmills anyway? Discover that sport you used to play or go for a scenic run with a friend instead. Not only will you get a workout, you will feel better about being outdoors and taking up new activities.
- Buy More Produce. If you replace one snack food on your shopping list with a healthier choice like carrots or celery, you will save money in addition to calories. Spice up these snacks with a healthy dip like hummus or guacamole, and stock up on greens. You can have the same convenience as a bag of chips with baby carrots or a pre-washed salad.
- Do Not Buy Everything Organic. The main problem that organic foods avoid is pesticides. These chemicals stay on foods where the external skin is eaten, like berries and apples. Foods that you peel, such as citrus and bananas, are not at risk for pesticides and buying them organic does not make as much sense.
Most people make excuses for why they cannot make changes like this, whether it be time or convenience. When you think about it, however, it can take less time to exercise at home or at the park, and you would be buying food anyway. It is really a simple change in behavior, but can go a long way towards making you healthier without costing you much.
