The Problem with Fad Diets

It seems that every week another new miracle diet comes out that promosies to help you lose those excess pounds effortlessly. That is one of the biggest problems with fad diets. People get sucked into whatever scheme is the latest and never lose a pound for their money.

Cabbage Soup Diet?

Cabbage Soup Diet?

One example of a fad diet that started years ago but is still heard of today is the Cabbage Soup Diet. According to the rules of this diet, you mix up a special Cabbage Soup that includes other vegetables. This soup can be eaten as often and as much as desired. However, each day has a certain type of food that you can eat on that day and nothing else EXCEPT that particular food along with the Cabbage Soup. A side effect is that this one produces quite a bit of gas.

Another example of a fad diet that was taken very seriously at its inception and still sells books today is the Atkins Diet Plan. This is a low carbohydrate program that encourages avoiding having carbohydrates in your diet. Supposedly, this is made to keep from adding weight to your body. This plan suggests eating less than 20 grams of carbohydrates daily. Some have had success with this method and swear by it, but it might not work for everyone.

Fad Diets that Work

The South Beach Diet has a little something going for it in that it appears to be a healthier version of The Atkins Diet and The Zone in that it promotes decreased carbohydrates in the diet. It really does not appear to be anything special because people who follow this are simply lowering their intake of calories. Again, you must consider this a fad diet because it basically is an example of fancy packaging and marketing savvy.

The biggest problem with fad diets is that none of them do what they promise to do. In addition, any weight lost on them typically comes back.
